Winter blooms at Cooper-Molera

Even though it is rainy and wet here in the garden, we still have some beautiful blooms! Our garden is designed to have year round blossoms.

New Exhibit: Armin Hansen Paintings and Etchings

Now on view! We would like to thank the City of Monterey and the deHaven/Jacks collections for loaning this exclusive collection of paintings and etchings from their collection as part of our “Changing Places” art program.

Throughout the year we will be displaying artwork from Monterey County institutions, galleries and private collections that reflect or are connected to Monterey’s history in a unique and important way for the public to enjoy.

New Exhibit: Sign of the Times in Diaz Gallery

Two centuries of commercial signs at the Cooper Adobe complex.

For almost two hundred years a variety of businesses have occupied the Spear Warehouse and Corner Store within the Cooper Adobe Complex.

In 1836 Nathan Spear opened a store in the Spear Warehouse with partners Jacob Primer Leese and William Hinkley. Over the next century a hotel, restaurant and bar, Ballet studio and boys club welcomed the Monterey community.

The Corner store, built by Manuel Diaz, has housed general merchandise stores, a real estate office, a gift store and now Alta Bakery. To attract customers, business owners employed a variety of advertising signs, trademarks and slogans which can be seen in this exhibit.

Garden workshops galore!

Thanks to all who attended our garden workshops this month starting with The Historic Garden League’s own Isabella de Sibert and Al Graham. After our regularly scheduled HGL workday on January 15th, Isabella and Al led garden tours and a hands on clinic for rose pruning techniques.

Our next workshop was well attended on January 18 with Peter Quintanilla with his Fruit Tree pruning class. The class covered the initial training of young saplings to the annual pruning of bearing trees and some tips on how to renovate an old or neglected tree: Varieties included apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries and figs.

Peter Quintanilla is an ISA Certified Arborist and Pruning Specialist. He teaches arboriculture and landscape pruning at Cabrillo and Monterey Peninsula Colleges and has been pruning the Cooper Molera orchard for the last 17 years.

Cooper-Molera Adobe Christmas in the Adobes

A big thank you to all who volunteered, attended, and celebrated California State Park’s 36th Annual Christmas in the Adobes event last weekend. We are so glad to have been open again for this great event and we hope you felt all the warmth and cheer for the holidays. We hope everyone has a great holiday season!

A Hurrah for our Volunteer Training Session!

A big thank you to all who attended our free volunteer training and docent information session on November 13th. We had a presentation by our Co-Director of Partnerships and Interpretation Meg Clovis about the history of Captain Cooper, the growth of Monterey and early California life and Cooper-Molera’s transformations as a whole.

If you are interested in becoming a docent, or learning more about Cooper-Molera’s history, stop in the Adobe sometime to learn more about becoming involved in our growing site!

 

Life in Monterey in the 1850’s with Dennis Copeland: November 2, 2019

A very successful and packed house at the Monterey Public Library for the Historic Garden League’s Life in Monterey in the 1850’s with Dennis Copeland. Thanks to all who attended!

Volunteering for Christmas in the Adobes at Cooper-Molera

Thanks to all who have signed up for Christmas in the Adobes as a volunteer. Shift information and schedule will go out to you shortly. We have many positions that need your help to make this a great event! As a volunteer for Cooper-Molera, you are welcome to enjoy the CITA tour for free during the event.

We have shifts of two hours a night available 5pm-7pm and 7pm-9pm, Dec. 13 and 14th.

A Visit from Captain Cooper School

 

A big thank you to Captain Cooper’s school for visiting us as their namesake for the school! Our group of kinders got to experience the Cooper-Molera Adobe and learned about Captain Cooper who lived onsite, they decorated handmade cookies courtesy of Alta Bakery using edible flowers and herbs from our garden and enjoyed a tour of the home.

A big thanks to History Fest!

A big thanks to History fest and everyone who participated. It was a lovely weekend for history in Monterey! We showcased magazines and journals the Cooper and Molera families owned in the 1800’s.

Monterey History Fest has grown into a festival that offers a variety of programs for both residents and visitors to experience Monterey’s unique cultural heritage and historic resources. History Fest has developed a schedule designed to bring Monterey’s past to life during this community-wide event.

Painting From Porches: September 20-22, 2019

We had a blast at our last weekend’s event Painting from Porches! From a blistering sunny Saturday to a great Sunday sale at our very own Cooper-Molera Adobe.

Thanks to all that signed up and participated! We appreciate all your feedback.

Painting from Porches is a plein air art show and sale featuring the work of fine artists painting the picturesque town of Monterey. Artists had the opportunity to paint from porches, balconies, piers, wharfs and platforms creating a new perspective for visual interpretation of the town.

 

COMING UP: History Fest: October 12, 2019, 10am-4pm

Monterey History Fest has grown into a festival that offers a variety of programs for both residents and visitors to experience Monterey’s unique cultural heritage and historic resources. History Fest has developed a schedule designed to bring Monterey’s past to life during this community-wide event. All events are free of charge unless otherwise noted.
The center for Monterey History Fest will be located at upper Custom House Plaza in downtown Monterey where you can gather information from various cultural heritage groups and learn about the weekend’s activities. The information center will be open Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Additionally, the Monterey State Historic Park’s will open several adobes free to the public including Custom House, Pacific House, Cooper-Molera Adobe and the Stevenson House throughout the weekend.

Our neighbors the Youth Art Collective had a great ending reception on August 9th for their show “Element of Surprise” located in the Diaz Gallery in Alta Bakery’s inside seating area. Congrats on a great show!

Opening reception will be Thursday, August 22, 2019 from 5:00-6:30.

Christmas in the Adobes: December 13-14, 2019 5pm-9pm

We are now recruiting volunteers for our upcoming event Christmas in the Adobes.

This event allows guests to stroll the streets of Historic Downtown Monterey and visit 19^th-Century Mexican Era adobes decorated for the holidays. Enjoy fandango dance lessons at Custom  House, treats at Fisherman’s Wharf or bagpipes and shortbread cookies at Robert Louis Stevenson House, to name a few. Many other adobes offer entertainments, refreshments, games, history and loads of fun. It’s a holiday event for the entire family!
